The importance of Wills for cohabiting Couples
A survey by the Office for National Statistics has revealed that the percentage of the UK population who are 16 and over and were cohabiting, and had never been married or in a civil partnership increased from 6.8% in 2002 to 9.5% in 2015, highlighting how important it is for unmarried couples to write Wills and be aware of the legal implications if you do not.
Your estate may not pass in entirety to any of your relatives and it could be distributed under intestacy and not in accordance to any of your wishes. Property ownership can cause additional concerns as to whether your property should be held as joint tenants or tenants in common. If you have contributed differing amounts of money to your purchase or to any improvements you should ensure the property is registered as Tenants in Common and not as Joint Tenants.
Having a Will drawn up professionally to encompass your inheritance issues, ensuring the financial safety of your loved ones left behind is vitally important to those leaving together outside the matrimony.
